A Letter of Apology from Robert

Dear Friends,

As many of you will know, over the last two and a half weeks we’ve been working closely with the US Food and Drug Administration after a number cases of salmonella were traced to the seasoning used to make Veggie Booty.

To the families who have been affected we extend our sincerest apologies.

For me, this company is like a family and our customers are part of this family.  The trust we’ve built with you is our most valuable asset and we intend to work hard to find out exactly how this happened and what we need to do to make certain it doesn’t happen again.

At Robert’s we take food safety very seriously and we will be working with our suppliers and distributors to strengthen our quality control protocols for all our food products.

We’ve been making Robert’s American Gourmet snacks since 1986 and a strong commitment to taste, quality, and service is at the heart of all the products we make. In keeping with that promise, we will do our best to keep you informed and reassured as this problem is resolved.

Sincerely,

Rob

VEGGIE BOOTY RECALL – FACT SHEET

veggieAt Robert’s American Gourmet we take food safety very seriously and want to ensure that our customers have access to the facts concerning our June 28th recall of Veggie Booty. We have and will continue to work closely with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Center for Disease Control (CDC), as well as our suppliers and distributors in investigating this event.

THE FACTS

  • At 9 am, June 28th,2007, Robert’s American Gourmet was notified by the FDA that Veggie Booty was suspected to be the likely cause of 51 reported cases of salmonella.  This was the first time we heard of any problem with the product.
  • Within 60 minutes, our distributors were notified that we were recalling Veggie Booty.  Shortly thereafter, all our mail order customers were notified of the recall by telephone.
  • Veggie Booty will remain off the shelves until the pending investigation has been concluded.
  • On July 2nd, we made the decision to voluntarily recall Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks, the only other product to use the same seasoning as Veggie Booty.
  • No other products manufactured by Robert’s American Gourmet use the seasoning in question.
  • The veggie seasoning was removed from our manufacturing plant and placed in quarantine.
  • On June 28th and 29th, the FDA collected retention samples of Veggie Booty and its seasoning for testing.  At the same time, Robert’s sent the seasoning and retention samples to an independent laboratory for testing.
  • On July 12th, Robert’s was informed that the FDA test results confirmed that the seasoning used in Veggie Booty tested positive for Salmonella.
  • The U.S. manufacturing facility which produces Veggie Booty has an American Institute of Baking ”Excellent” rating for food safety and good manufacturing processes.  The plant is also certified under the Orthodox Union (OU) supervision.
  • On June 29th, the FDA’s environmental swab tests confirmed that the plant was free of any contaminants, and all other products are safe.

Booty Praise

Here is a sample of the emails, letters and phone calls of support in this difficult time.
Thank you all!

Your website is the best I have EVER seen!!!!!   And your food is
delicious....Tings are my absolute favorite snack to eat (and my 5 and
1 year old daughters love them too!)   Thank you for having them
available to purchase online!    What a wonderful company and amazing  website!   Keep up the great work!

-- Dana

I saw your pirates booty on cartoon network.  I luckily found some in the local supermarket and bought one right away. This is very good stuff and some what more healthy then our traditional snacks.  Keep up the good work :)

-- Michael

Right now I'm at work doing data entry, which is quite dull. However, I'm also eating some of your smart puffs. They are so delicious! And I love how I get the satisfaction of a chip without all the fat and crazy chemicals. Rock on for both creating a fantastic product and brightening my day.

-- Erica

I just wanted to write your company a note to let you know how much I enjoy your products.  I have always been a lover of Cheetos and Cheese Balls, but had to stop eating them because they are unhealthy and fattening.  When I came across your Pirate's Booty I was in awe!  Then of course I discovered everything else you offer.  I have to say Tings are definitely my favorite; however, Pirates Swords do come in a close second.  Anyway, I thought you should know how much I (and others in my family) enjoy your snacks!!

-- Zack

I am sorry you are dealing with a product recall at this time.  My faith in your company remains steadfast because of your quick response and action to the situation.  I received a phone call alerting me to the recall as the above referenced order included a bag of Veggie Booty (which I did not request by the way).  I appreciate that phone call as I had not heard about the recall before then.

Good luck with this crisis...I'm certain the company will come out on the other side and will be better for the experience (trying to be positive for you all!!).

-- Roxann

I just visited your web site for the first time and I was so happy about what I read on it. I have been feeding your products to my kids since they were old enough to eat them. I am also concerned about them eating GMOs and tried to avoid them as much as possible (which is incredibly difficult and practicaly futile). When i read that you try not to use GMOs in your food I practically cried. Thank you so much for making such delicious, healthy products.

-- Maratea

I was shocked to hear that one of our all time favorite snack companies has a recall.  Please stay strong during this time and know that as soon as you have the all clear we will happily stock up on our favorites all over again!!! We do have several bags of Veggie Booty in the cupboard and will throw them out.  In the meantime we will be sending kind thoughts and blessings out to the children that have gotten sick and to your company, so that everyone will recover VERY quickly! Take care.

-- Chrissy and Gwendolyn

I read about the VB recall a few days ago, and was so sad to hear about it--this must be a very difficult time for you all.  We love VB and all of your other products, and have enjoyed them for years. (And no, we were not affected by any "bad" VB).  I especially appreciate your products that are gluten and dairy free--so hard to find these days!  I appreciate the way you are handling the recall--thank you for being up front and honest about the matter.

All the best--you'll come through!

-- Diane and Gail (whose "mum" I am)

My 3 boys and I eat VB every day and hope you're able to bring it back on the market soon.  It's their biggest green veggie supply ;-) Thankfully none of us are showing symptoms right now.  We hope that things move smoothly for you.  Just know you have many supporters here that love that booty!

-- Kim

I would like to take a moment in your time of trouble to thank you for making a good quality snack food in these days of grease and garbage. I do hope that this is resolved quickly and there is no continuing problems. Again thank you for making food that my family can be proud of and keep healthy with. GOod luck!

-- Dylan

I'm sorry this is happening to you guys. Hang in there. It could happen to any food maker responsible enough to use real vegitables, until the FDA or EPA is given the teeth to protect ground water.

-- Sophia

I wanted to share the following true story with you and your staff.

We taught our daughter how to use sign language when she was an infant. When she was about One year old she toddled up to me and signed 'cracker' while shaking her hips. I gave her a saltine but she shook her head refusing it. Then again she signed cracker and shook her hips even harder. I held up another bag of crackers but again she shook her head, clearly getting frustrated. Then she pointed to her bottom and signed cracker over and over. Finally, I figured out she was asking for "booty-crackers". After laughing my head off I obligingly gave her some. She is now two years old and Veggie Booty continues to be her favorite snack.

I feel confident that Roberts will get through this difficult time with class. My daughter certainly looks forward to having more booty-crackers soon.

-- Kirstin

Sorry to hear about the recall.  My daughter has celiac and we love your gluten free foods.  I hope this blows over soon.

-- Jeff

I'm sorry to hear about the recall, but I think you're doing the right thing.  Still, it is my sincere hope that, when all is said and done, you can resume Veggie Booty production. I am clinically addicted to Veggie Booty, and it's not clear I can survive without it.

-- David

I just wanted to write and applaud your company for taking a proactive stance on the recent recall of Veggie Booty. I just read about it on abcnews.com and while I have tried your product in the past (Whole Foods shopper), I do not have to worry about recent purchases. However, it is so refreshing in this day and age of corporate "escapes" where companies do not take responsibility for their actions and seem only interested in profits, to see a company take an interst in the long term health of its customers. It was refreshing to read that you had proactively and voluntarily started the recall. I hope the e. coli source (ed. note: Salmonella) turns out simply to be from various sources of raw vegetables or something like the recent Taco Bell green onion, and not your product. But regardless, as a consumer in an uncertain world of food safety, such as the latest imports from China, it is nice to have a USA company that really stands behind the end consumers health. Thank you and I look forward to trying other Robert's products in the future

-- Amy

Hello Rob!
I am a big Booty Head! I have been enjoying your product since at least college and I love it!!! MMM I could go through a whole bag of booty myself!  Today as I was chowing down on the booty I noticed that both my brother and I scouted out the bigger pieces of booty in the bag and I thought WOW it would really be great if there were a whole bag of bigger booty.  I really love the larger pieces smooth puffed light airy crisp mmm.  So what do you think, Pirates Big Booty?  Pirates SUper Booty? Pirates extra-large booty?  Doesn't it all sound so good?  Then you could brach in other directions as I'm sure there are BootyHeads opposite of me that enjoy the smaller crunchier booty.  Extra crispy booty!  If any of this babble catches on please let me know I would really enjoy some large booty!
